The Mayor of Rushcliffe Cllr Tina Combellack has thanked knitters and felters across the Borough for making hundreds of sustainable red poppies that now decorate wreaths that will be laid at Remembrance Day events and reflections.
Her Remembrance Day Appeal saw a wonderful response from crafters in Rushcliffe as many wool, felt and other sustainable materials now make up over 30 wreaths that will presented at ceremonies and churches on Remembrance Sunday (November 13).
Residents kindly followed a guideline template for their creations but their creativity came to the fore with the Mayor delighted with their quality, style and range that were then carefully applied to the wreaths.
Madam Mayor said: “A huge thanks to all those who have taken such time and effort to make and donate hundreds and hundreds of poppies.
“It is heartening to see such dedication from volunteers from all over the Borough with creations that will be such an important part of the reflection of all those who have given their lives in conflict.
“We were keen to explore what was possible and if sourcing natural, environmentally friendly wreaths as an alternative to plastic wreaths would work and I am very glad to say they have.
“So many of us as residents look at further ways in which we can use more sustainable items and I thought the poppies were a great visual example of where we can make another difference to our environment.
“Thank you to everyone who helped us realise this ambition, the wreaths will proudly stand out at churches and memorials in the Borough on Sunday. A donation for each poppy will now be made to the Royal British Legion.”
