Minister gives green light to A52 Nottingham Knight – Wheatcroft junction improvements

Work to reduce congestion by improving the capacity of two large junctions on the A52 in West Bridgford and Edwalton can now get under way after being given the go-ahead by the Secretary of State following a public inquiry.

Approval of the scheme means National Highways can now carry out work around the Nottingham Knight and Wheatcroft roundabouts to enlarge and change the layout of the roundabouts and junctions, with a cut through to be installed in the middle of the island connecting the A52 to help reduce journey times.

Other work will include installing new signals and improving pedestrian routes with the installation of crossings.

An inquiry was held in July after National Highways submitted a Compulsory Purchase Order and Side Roads Order to the Secretary of State for Transport to purchase land in the area and enable the progression of the development.

Jonathon Pizzey, senior project manager at National Highways, said:

“We welcome this decision which is a pivotal step in our proposals to transform an important east-west link road in Nottinghamshire, connecting communities and key parts of the city and its surrounding towns.

“It has always been our priority to help reduce congestion at these busy junctions and keep traffic flowing, and we remain committed to improving commuter journeys while supporting the long-term growth of the region.”

Since 2021, work has already been completed on upgrading four of the smaller A52 junctions at Bingham, Stragglethorpe, Silverdale and Gamston. Measures to improve these junctions have included updating and installing new signals, junction reconstructions and improved pedestrian and cycle routes to make the road safer for all users and provide capacity for more traffic from nearby developments.

The Nottingham Knight and Wheatcroft junctions are the largest of this project and mark the final stage of the planned works to increase the capacity of the A52 south of Nottingham.

Griffiths Farrans Joint Venture (GFJV), which has been identified as the main contractor to deliver the work, will now finalise plans for its initial works which are expected to start in 2026. This is subject to completion of the six-week period when appeals can be lodged.
