Network Rail issues snow update after heavy snow overnight

Network Rail issued this update at 7:45 am on Friday 9 January.

  • Thousands of railway staff worked through the night in difficult conditions and will continue to work today to get lines open in areas affected by Storm Goretti.
  • Much of the network is open and running normally – particularly in Eastern and South Eastern regions – but customers are still advised to check their whole journeys before travelling, particularly if they are planning journeys into areas affected by the storm.
  • Very intense heavy snow hit West Midlands/Shropshire and Staffordshire last night, along with high winds in the West Country and Wales. Railway staff working to clear routes in those areas this morning, with chainsaw gangs and snow ploughs ready to help them.
  • Passengers in the West Midlands around Birmingham advised not to travel by train until at least 1200. Some lines in the region may remain closed until Saturday.
  • Severe disruption in Wales – many lines closed across the country, customers strongly advised to check their journeys before they travel. Reduced timetable in place on lines that are open – including lines around Cardiff.
  • No trains between Sheffield and Manchester until Saturday.
  • No trains in Cornwall until 1200 on the Plymouth to Penzance Main Line and later this afternoon on branch lines.
