New bridge to restore access at Attenborough Nature Reserve as parking restrictions begin

A replacement bridge is due to arrive at Attenborough Nature Reserve today, with parking restrictions in place this week to allow a large crane and delivery vehicles to reach the site.

The new Works Bridge will restore bridleway access along an important route through the reserve, replacing the existing derelict structure.

In an update on Monday 12 October, the reserve said the replacement consists of two sections totalling more than 25 metres. A large crane will be used to unload the sections, lift out the old bridge and manoeuvre the new structure into place.

Parking restrictions apply along Attenborough Lane and Allendale Avenue between 9.30am and 4pm from Monday 12 October to Friday 16 October 2026.

The Temporary Traffic Regulation Order, approved by Nottinghamshire County Council, is needed to accommodate the vehicles transporting the bridge and the crane required for its installation.

The reserve said the arrangements would also allow the old structure to be removed and transported in one operation during the week, reducing the impact on residents, visitors and wildlife.

Planning permission has been approved for the replacement, which comes as the reserve celebrates the 60th anniversary of its opening by Sir David Attenborough.

The project follows refurbishment of other bridges and investment in wildlife watching screens and hides across the reserve.

Announcing the bridge’s expected arrival, the reserve said: “We will keep the disruption to a minimum but would like to thank our neighbours for their patience and support.”
