Birdhouse Café will open its doors on 23 April, creating seven new jobs. Based on the corner of Middle Pavement and Weekday Cross, the 21-capacity venue will work in partnership with local brands including, 200 Degrees Coffee, Ugly Bread Bakery and Belvoir Fruit Farms.

Designed to provide a welcoming place for both customers and independent businesses, Birdhouse Café will also provide retail space to support small and start-up craft, art, lifestyle and fashion brands to showcase their talent.

Dan Shaw is the director of Birdhouse Café and is looking forward to using his 30 years of experience working with retail start-ups and household names to further support Nottingham’s thriving independent scene:

“Nottingham is a vibrant and varied city that manages to combine big brands and emerging talent very well. It’s the perfect location for us to launch the Birdhouse Café concept and provide a space where customers can relax and be inspired.

“We make no secret of the fact that we’re fiercely loyal to the community, and the team is really excited to start working with local businesses to find creative ways for them to benefit from Birdhouse Café. Whether that be an artist using our walls to display their art or an independent designer selling their own range of greetings cards, we want people to know that Birdhouse Café is a place for everyone.

“We also arrive at intu Broadmarsh at an exciting time and we’re very much looking forward to being part of the centre’s future.”

Open Monday – Saturday, 8.30am – 5.00pm, the venue offers free wi-fi and USB charging points, with customers being encouraged to stay as long as they want.

“We aren’t creating a coffee house that’s based on quick turnaround,” added Dan. “We want our customers to know we’re there if they want a quick coffee on the way to work or bite to eat at lunch, but equally, if you want to bring your laptop with you and spend the morning with us, you’re more than welcome.”

For Hannah Nichols-Pearce, channel manager at Belvoir Fruit Farms, partnering with Birdhouse Café was an easy decision:

“As a business, we’re celebrating 35 years of working locally and supporting neighbouring businesses wherever possible. When we started talking to Birdhouse Café, we quickly realised there was a lot of synergy between our two brands.

“Even though we now work internationally, we’re proud to still be a family owned-business that is all about promoting premium, natural soft drinks from here in the East Midlands. We’re looking forward to offering customers at Birdhouse Café a selection of our delicious sparkling Pressés.”

Echoing Hannah’s thoughts is Rob Darby, co-founder of 200 Degrees Coffee:

“We are proud to be partnering with Birdhouse Café in Nottingham to provide our freshly roasted coffee to a new community focused establishment opening in the city centre.

“As well as having our own shops in the city and our roastery close by in West Bridgford, partnering with local businesses is so important to us and we are proud to be part of this venture. The cafe is ideally situated in an area with good footfall and we wish Birdhouse every success in the future.”

Jade Vendone, managing director of Ugly Bread Bakery, added:

“I love the idea of creating creative, independent hubs that people are excited to go to. Retail is all about providing a point of difference and an experience at the moment and I think Birdhouse Café will do just that.

“I’m all for working together with other independent businesses to encourage more people to shop locally and appreciate locally sourced produce.”
