New Nottinghamshire skate park location changed because of proximity to homes

The location of a planned new skate park in Stapleford has been moved after concern it was too close to homes.

Stapleford – Earlier in January, Broxtowe Borough Council suggested new skate facilities to be built at Central Avenue Recreation Ground.

It would replace the old skate park on Hickings Lane, which had to be demolished in July 2022.

A report to be discussed at council’s cabinet meeting next week now proposes the replacement skate park is built at Pasture Road Recreation Ground.

The council previously considered five locations for the new facilities, including Ilkeston Road Recreation Ground, Queen Elizabeth Park, Archers Field Recreation Ground, Hickings Land and Central Avenue, settling on the latter earlier this year.

The space at Hickings Lane Recreation Ground could no longer be considered in the plans as it will soon have reduced space, with the new £6.4 million Community Pavilion due to open there next year.

The report reads said: “The small recreation site at Central Avenue and Archer’s Field, both parks were deemed not to be ideal due to close proximity of residential properties and concerns about access arrangements for emergency vehicles.”

According to documents to be viewed by the council’s cabinet, the new facilities would be beginner-friendly and connected through an existing, improved or new path.

Other possible designs could make use of skate paths, where skate park items exist alongside a path, and making the paths on Pasture Road wheel friendly to be accessible to BMX riders.

A January council report said between £200,000 and £250,000 would need to be raised before works on a new skate park can begin.

A more recent report discusses re-purposing part of the council’s Towns Fund Grant to fund the net cost of the new skate park, which will be discussed next week.

The Towns Fund is money allocated by the government, of which Broxtowe Borough Council will receive over £21 million.

Skate Nottingham CIC have also worked with the council to financially support a new skate park.

They formed a successful Crowdfunder UK campaign last autumn, which raised £12,000 towards the construction of a new skate park, including £4,800 match funding from Sport England.”

Last year, a Skate Nottingham’s online survey saw 92 per cent of responses wanting to see a skate park in Stapleford, despite only 32 per cent of respondents identifying themselves as skate park users.

The recreation ground can be accessed from Pasture Road, Peatfield Road and New Road.

The development will be discussed by the council’s cabinet in a meeting next Tuesday (September 3).
