New primary schools for 700 pupils in East Leake and Bingham approved by council

Two new primary schools in Rushcliffe providing places for more than 700 pupils have been approved for building by Nottinghamshire county councillors.

In Bingham, a new school for 315 pupils will be built off land between Widnall Drive and Drunsmore Drive.

A new school in East Leake will take up to 420 pupils and will be built near Rempstone Road.

The two primary schools are anticipated to open in September 2022. They will also feature nurseries with 26 places on offer at each for very young children.

The two planning applications approved by Nottinghamshire County Council’s Planning and Rights of Way Committee emphasised a requirement for the schools due to significant housing developments being built nearby.

Councillor Richard Butler, Chairman of the county council’s Planning and Rights of Way Committee, said: “Both Bingham and East Leake are expanding with significant residential developments being built which will see more families moving into both areas.

“The committee agreed that two new primary schools in south Nottinghamshire would be required for pupils because of population growth and to satisfy new residents.

“Concerns were raised about increased traffic and car congestion from the schools and it was emphasised that the management of the new schools must work closely with families and stakeholders to avoid any potential problems.

“We also welcomed that both new schools will feature pathways to and from nearby housing developments giving easy access to young people and parents living on the new estates.

“After looking through all the details, the committee felt the new schools would offer a much-needed service without putting undue pressure on local infrastructure.”

Both planning applications included provisions for outside play areas including grass playing fields.

Neither Bingham nor East Leake town councils objected to the new primary schools during the consultation periods.
