Newark: Christmas lights switch-on and market cancelled due to Storm Bert

Newark Town Council has announced the event will be cancelled over safety concerns because of the weather forecast this weekend.

“It is with deep regret that we must announce that, due to the likely impact of Storm Bert and associated weather warnings, the Christmas Lights Switch-On event this Sunday will not be going ahead.

“The strong wind gusts forecast are a cause of safety concerns for the stage production team both during the event and during the planned stage construction period, which was due to get underway on Saturday. Traders who were due to be using gazebos are also compromised. Additionally, some of the fairground rides planned are unable to operate in the wind speeds that are forecast.

“We are very mindful of the safety and comfort of all traders, staff, visitors, and performers alike, and for an event that typically has a very large attendance, safety has to be paramount.

“There will still be elements of activity continuing, with the indoor artisan market taking place as planned in the Buttermarket.

“The stage and most of the performances that had been planned are now scheduled to take place on 8 December as part of our Steampunk and Christmas market programme that day. This will provide an enhanced entertainment schedule on 8 December. Many of the traders will also now attend on 8 December instead of this Sunday.

“We will still switch on the Christmas Lights this coming Sunday at a suitable time, albeit without the usual countdown and entertainment surrounding it.

“We are deeply saddened by this decision, which has been made based on discussions with and advice from various agencies. A lot of work goes into events like this, and the decision has not been taken lightly.

“We do hope to welcome many of you to the Steampunk and Christmas market weekend scheduled for 7 and 8 December, details of which can be found here:

“As well as the indoor market at the Buttermarket continuing as planned, Newark’s fantastic array of independent local shops and eateries will still be open as usual this weekend, offering gifts and treats for the perfect Christmas shopping trip. Visitors can also take advantage of the free festive weekend car parking at District Council-owned car parks in Newark, starting on Sunday 24 November and lasting until Sunday 29 December. This includes Bank Holidays on 25 and 26 December.

“Participating car parks include Appleton Gate, London Road, The Wharf, Riverside, Riverside Arena, and Castle House. This does not apply to resident, contract, and the ASI car park. Those parking on one of the free weekends must remember to pick up a ticket from the parking machine to display in their car – you still won’t be charged!”
