No new petrol or diesel cars will be sold after 2030

The government has initiated a consultation on phasing out the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030, aiming to advance the transition to cleaner energy and support economic growth.

The plan includes ensuring that all new cars and vans will be 100% zero emission by 2035.

This transition away from fossil fuels is essential for reducing carbon emissions and improving energy security. It also represents an opportunity for innovation in cutting-edge technologies, with benefits such as cleaner air, quieter streets, and enhanced quality of life. Many individuals and businesses are already adopting electric vehicles due to their lower running costs, ease of maintenance, and driving experience.

The consultation seeks input on technology options and the types of vehicles allowed between 2030 and 2035, in line with the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate. It also explores ways to strengthen domestic manufacturing and position the UK as a leading market for ZEVs.

To support this transition, efforts to expand the charging infrastructure nationwide will continue, building on significant progress to date. Measures include simplifying planning rules, accelerating grid connection processes, and providing funding for local councils. A broad package of initiatives, backed by £6 billion in private investment through 2030, aims to make charging infrastructure easier to install and more accessible.

These policies build on over £2.3 billion in government support for manufacturers and consumers to transition to zero emission vehicles. Collaboration with the automotive and charging sectors will be key to successfully implementing this shift and ensuring a sustainable and prosperous future.
