Lungfish Architects, the Nottingham-based practice, has more than doubled in size since its inception two years ago and, with multi-million pound projects spanning the length and breadth of the UK, the team believe that this is only the beginning.
Simon Reid, managing director at Lungfish said: “When Lungfish incorporated in 2016 there were only eight of us; we’re now a 17-strong team of architects, with experience across a variety of sectors – from residential and retail to education and care.”
The firm celebrated with over 100 staff, clients and suppliers at an event in the city centre.
A subsidiary of Scape Group, one of the UK’s leading procurement specialists, Lungfish Architects Ltd launched in 2016 and has since gone on to create in excess of 22,000 school places across the country. Lungfish is the design partner for Sunesis – a joint venture between Scape Group and major construction contractor Willmott Dixon – which specialises in offsite pre-designed builds for the education sector and can be delivered by any of the Scape framework partners.
“We’re incredibly proud of the work we’ve done in the education sector, designing innovative facilities that address clients’ needs and provide students and teachers with inspirational learning environments,” continued Simon.
“In just two years we’ve worked on construction projects in excess of £100 million. This is only the beginning for us and I would like to thank all of our staff, clients and suppliers who have made Lungfish’s first two years such a success.
“We’re now looking to the future, with a view to develop further work in new sectors and regions and continue to find creative new solutions for clients and communities.”
Wates Group has collaborated with Lungfish to deliver Bluecoat Academy Primary for Nottingham City Council and, more recently, on the expansion of Murray Park Community School for Derby City Council.
Alistair McCallum, regional business director at Wates Construction said: “For a construction project to be a success, close interaction with partners is essential. It’s important for architects to be able to explain clearly not only what they envisage the finished building to look like, but why – Lungfish is excellent at doing this. Simon and his team are also able to have open and respectful discussions to improve upon a client’s plans and make helpful suggestions that are ultimately for the good of the whole project.
“Nottingham City Council was delighted with the work we did with Lungfish at Bluecoat Academy and I’m confident that Derby City Council will be too. We’d like to congratulate Lungfish on its successful first two years, and we look forward to working together on more projects in the years to come.”
Lungfish is working closely with Arc Partnership, the joint venture set up between Nottinghamshire County Council and Scape Group to deliver better outcomes for the community of Nottinghamshire. Commenting on the combined resources of Lungfish’s architectural design and Arc Partnership’s construction services, Daniel Maher, managing director at Arc Partnership, said “We’re now harnessing one another’s strengths, building on what already exists in each practice and across each discipline and working to provide something really unique for the client.
“There is a massive potential for regeneration in Nottinghamshire and we want to be in the position to be able to help the council with delivering a programme of works that benefits our communities – and doing that in collaboration with Lungfish.” continued Dan.
As part of Scape Group, Lungfish takes on public sector projects procured through Scape Procure’s national and regional frameworks, in addition to working with private sector clients across the UK.
Richard Dobbs, pre-construction director at Morgan Sindall said: “We’re working on a number of exciting opportunities with Lungfish – both on the framework and outside it. Morgan Sindall, and our external clients, are particularly interested in Lungfish’s partnership with Sunesis and the unique offering the two produce.
“We currently feel that Lungfish has honed its offering in education through experience on the framework. It enables them to develop efficient, streamlined designs that are particularly attractive to local authority clients.”
