Members of the Nottingham Branch of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) will be holding a vigil on Monday 1st September in support of colleagues killed in Gaza.
The event will take place at 5.30pm in Station Street, near to Nottingham Railway Station and the junction with Carrington Street.
Local journalists will read out the names of more than 230 journalists who have been killed since October 2023 in what has become the deadliest war for journalists in recent history.
Campaigns coordinator of the Nottingham Branch of the NUJ Chris Tregenza said: “As a branch, we condemn in the strongest possible terms the deliberate targeting and killing of journalists who are doing their jobs in hugely challenging circumstances. These brave people have put their lives on the line and have made the ultimate sacrifice.
“Over 230 journalists have been killed, most recently five reporters at the Nasser Hospital in a ‘double tap’ aimed at journalists and rescue workers who attended the scene.
“Free and accurate journalism is an essential part of our society. This is recognised in international law and journalists are protected under the Geneva Convention. An attack on journalists anywhere in the world is an attack on journalism, and here in Nottingham we stand in support of our colleagues who have lost their lives in this terrible conflict.
“On Monday we will be reading the names of all journalists killed in Palestine over the past two years. We ask the public to spend a few minutes with us in quiet contemplation as we remember them.”
According to the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and at the time of this press release going out, at least 233 journalists and media workers have been killed over the last 22 months in the conflict.
The Nottingham event is part of a series of events organised by the NUJ and its branches, along with sister unions around the world, in solidarity and in support of journalists working in Gaza.
