Nottingham business banned from performing Brazilian Butt Lifts after investigation

Gedling Borough Council has banned a local business from offering high-risk cosmetic procedures after a formal investigation.

In February, the council’s Public Protection Service served a Prohibition Notice to Zayaani Aesthetics and Training Limited based in Carlton. The notice bans the business from carrying out or training others in non-surgical Brazilian Butt Lifts (BBLs), a procedure where patients are injected with fillers in their buttocks.

The investigation found that the business lacked properly trained staff, appropriate equipment, and the ability to manage complications during or after the procedure. These failings posed serious risks to public health.

Non-surgical BBLs are among the most dangerous procedures in the beauty industry. Complications can include pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, tissue death, and sepsis. These risks are well-documented, and local authorities have powers to act when businesses fall short of safety standards.

Currently, BBLs are not covered by the same licensing rules that apply to tattooing or massage. However, the government is expected to introduce new regulations soon. These will require businesses offering invasive beauty treatments to meet recognised training standards and undergo inspections before being licensed.

Councillor David Ellis, Portfolio Holder for Public Protection, said:

“This action sends a clear message. We will not tolerate unsafe practices that put people at risk. Our officers acted quickly and decisively to protect the public. We urge anyone considering these procedures to check that their practitioner is properly qualified and regulated.”

The council advises residents to use practitioners registered with the Care Quality Commission or the General Medical Council. The British Beauty Council recommends that only qualified medical professionals with specialist training carry out these procedures.
