A Nottingham care home has been rated ‘inadequate’ after inspectors found residents were “not safe and were placed at risk of harm”.
Kingsthorpe View Care Home in Nottingham, which cares for up to 50 people, was placed in special measures by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) after an inspection in November 2022.
The service, based in Kildare Road, provides support to people living with mental health problems, dementia, physical disability or sensory impairment.
The home has been downgraded from its previous ‘requires improvement’ rating given in January 2022.
The inspection was prompted in part due to concerns received about poor management of people’s end-of-life care needs, safeguarding, consent, tissue viability and fall management.
Inspectors were also told by staff there were “dangerous staffing levels” at the home and the report states that “staffing levels compromised people’s health and safety”.
Staff also said: “We are chasing round, and records don’t get done. We don’t have time to just chat with people or hold their hands; because there is another task to do.”
The report also stated that some care plans did not contain detailed information about how to support people as they wished at the end of their lives, and relatives said they had not been involved in conversations around end-of-life care planning.
Not all staff were aware of people’s Do Not Attempt Resuscitation (DNAR) decisions.
The report stated: “The environment, poor infection control processes, medication management and lack of consideration of fire safety measures at the service put people at risk.
“People were not always safeguarded from the risk of abuse. The manager had not investigated incidents to ensure abuse was identified, or measures to reduce risks had been taken.
“Not all staff had received safeguarding adults training. This left people at risk of being supported by staff who did not understand how to ensure people were protected from the risk of abuse or harm.
“At the time of the inspection, there were some ongoing safeguarding investigations being conducted by the local authority and the manager was assisting with those enquiries.”
However, the report stated that relatives and residents told inspectors that staff were kind, caring and they liked the staff who supported them.
The CQC will reinspect within six months if it does not propose to cancel the home’s registration.
