Nottingham city bike theft suspects arrested after 999 call

A cyclist was reunited with two bikes minutes after they were stolen thanks to the police response.
A member of the public rang 999 after spotting two men removing padlocks from two pedal bikes at the back of a residential complex.

They then rode the bikes away from the building in Lower Parliament Street, near Nottingham’s Motorpoint Arena.

The crime was reported at 1.47pm on Sunday (1 March) and two suspects were arrested eight minutes later.

Response officers were provided with a description of the two suspects and headed to the area in a marked police car.

At 1.55pm, they spotted two bikes being ridden along Cranbrook Street by two men matching the description. The officers stopped both men and placed them in handcuffs.

The suspects were taken into custody and the bikes returned to their owner.
Jason Burton, of North Sherwood Street, Nottingham, was charged with theft and possession of Class A and B drugs after he was found in possession of mamba and a container of brown and white wraps, believed to be heroin and cocaine.

The 44-year-old pleaded guilty to the offences at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Monday (2 March) and was fined £160. He must also pay a court surcharge and £85 prosecution costs.

The second suspect was also charged with theft. He pleaded not guilty and was bailed with conditions ahead of a trial at the magistrates’ court at a later date.

Sergeant Graham Collington, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“Thanks to the rapid response of our officers, the bikes were returned to their owner before he’d realised they had been stolen.

“We would like to thank the member of the public who alerted us to these thefts. We are always grateful for calls like this as it gives us the best chance of catching suspects.

“Bicycle theft is an upsetting crime and I’m pleased we were able to track down two suspects within minutes of the report and put them before the courts.”
