Nottingham City Homes (NCH) says that it has supported residents to claim over £300,000 in financial support and grants to help them through the coronavirus pandemic.
The social housing organisation has seen a huge increase in demand for advice since the Government announced a lockdown of the UK, which left many people uncertain about their pay and income.
Over the last few weeks, they’ve reportedly helped over 500 residents claim over £300,000 worth of financial support and grants – those claiming are mainly households who work and have had a change of circumstance with being unable to work, being furloughed, needing to increase caring responsibilities and deliver homeschooling.
One example is of a gentleman who lost his job due to his employer closing down. NCH helped him claim Universal Credit and New Style Job Seekers Allowance. They also offered help with getting back into work and worked with him to look at his budget so he had enough to cover his bills and rent until he finds a new job.
NCH has staff who are experts in the benefits system, including the new regulations and legislation passed by Government to help support residents through this crisis.
Nick Murphy, NCH Chief Executive, said: “No one will lose their council home during this pandemic and we are working to make sure that people can sustain their tenancy and still put food on the table. We know that this is a worrying time financially for many people. We will always take a supportive approach to help people with their rent and want to offer practical help.
“Our team works all year round to help our residents get the support and benefits they are entitled to. Over the past year we have helped residents get an extra £2.4million that they are entitled to.”
