Nottingham City Transport bus fares increase by over 4% average from 31 March

Nottingham City Transport (NCT) has undertaken its annual review of fares, which will see some prices change from Sunday 31st March 2024.

Regular customers who buy weekly or monthly Easyrider passes will see no rise and those who pay by the trip will still benefit from the maximum £2 single fare cap with NCT’s ongoing participation in the government’s Help for Household scheme.

In summary:

  • Adult Single fares remain capped at £2 as part of the government funded Help for Households scheme
  • Adult and Under 19 weekly and monthly Easyrider prices are frozen
  • Adult day ticket in the City Zone increases by just 10p to £5.30
  • Under 19 tickets in the City Zone increase to £1.70 single and £3.20 for a day ticket
  • Grouprider increases by 50p – the equivalent of as little as 10p per person – to £8.50 and remains available to buy and use all day, every day with no premium price at peak times
  • 43 of the 102 fares and passes available on NCT are frozen in price
  • Average increase in fares is 4.2%
  • City Zone boundary change at Clifton to incorporate the new Fairham Development

Whilst inflation has fallen and the bus industry continues to receive government financial support as it recovers post-pandemic, costs continue to rise and NCT has to set fares which realistically cover the cost of running its comprehensive network of services.

David Astill, NCT Managing Director said:

“We have worked hard to devise a fares increase for 2024 which has the minimum impact on our customers.

“We are pleased to confirm that our weekly and monthly Easyrider prices are frozen which is great news for Nottingham’s regular bus users. Of course, for those travelling less frequently and paying a day at a time, then the £2 capped single fare continues unchanged and we have been able to minimise the increase in our City Zone adult day ticket to just 10p – less than 2%.

“We know from the recent Transport Focus survey results that NCT attracts high value for money satisfaction scores that are above the national average and I am sure that will continue.”

Graham Chapman, Chair of NCT said, “Many bus companies throughout the UK are struggling and routes are being cut. In Nottingham, we have one of the best services in the country. We do not want to put fares up but in order to maintain the quality of service Nottingham is used to, we need some increase. I hope people will appreciate that many fares have been frozen.”
