UK Bus Operator of the Year, Nottingham City Transport, is marking the end of National Apprenticeship Week 2025 by announcing it’s on the lookout for its next cohort of apprentices.
National Apprenticeship Week is the biggest week in the apprenticeships and skills calendar, bringing together everyone passionate about apprenticeships and skills to celebrate the value, benefit, and opportunity that they bring.
With one of the youngest bus fleets in the country, Apprentice PCV Technicians at NCT will work on diesel, bio-gas and electric buses, providing learning with hands-on experience making a real impact in the transport industry.
NCT is offering a 4 year apprenticeship programme, which will lead to a Level 3 PCV Technician qualification through hand-on experience, with a large focus on new technology. Apprentices will help diagnose, repair and maintain the bus fleet, gaining experience in the mechanical and electrical systems on board.
The qualification is achieved through in house training, supported by an onsite mentor and block release to college on an ongoing basis.
Current apprentice, Amber Bancroft, who is in the third year of her apprenticeship said “I took on the apprenticeship because it was more hands on learning. I hadn’t had any experience in this field before, but it really is a career for life. You get to take on new challenges and learn new skills as well as make friends along the way”.
This opportunity is suitable for those new to the industry, such as school or college leavers, but also those with experience in vehicle repair and maintenance who wish to enter the sector.
Nottingham City Transport has an established track record for recruiting and developing its apprentices, with many progressing through the Company. Current Fleet Engineer Rob Sutcliffe was a former apprentice who has worked his way up through the Engineering Team and is now responsible for nearly 300 buses and 130 staff.
Rob said, “I started as an apprentice at 16 knowing that I just wanted to repair vehicles. Now, as Fleet Engineer, I am responsible for nearly 300 vehicles and 130 engineering staff. For anyone who is thinking about a career working on modern vehicles, I’d encourage you to apply now and follow in my footsteps”.
As well as the nationally recognised qualification and skills to become a qualified PCV Technician, NCT offers generous terms and conditions, with 25 days holiday per year, plus Bank Holidays; free travel on NCT bus services on the tram for the apprentice and two nominated people; a healthcare package and defined contribution pension scheme with 6% employer contributions.
