Nottingham contractor to open immersive VR cave to public

Members of the public and local schools are being welcomed for an exclusive glimpse of the Building Information Modelling (BIM) Cave at national contractor Willmott Dixon’s office in Nottingham as part of Open Doors week between 13-18 March.

Located at Lock House, Willmott Dixon’s innovative digital design space has been used to create some of the Midlands’ most high-profile new developments – such as the new custody suite in Nottingham – and brings client projects to life by translating technical drawings into immersive 3D models.

Led by Build UK, Open Doors is an annual event that allows thousands of people to go behind the hoardings and learn how the building project in their community is being constructed, as well as meet those responsible for it.

This particular opportunity, one of more than 20 Willmott Dixon sites involved in the initiative, aims to showcase the exciting world of construction and the many opportunities within it for people to enjoy a rewarding career.

Last year, Willmott Dixon was declared the UK’s ‘best big company to work for’ at the Best Companies awards, with chief executive Rick Willmott recognised as ‘best leader’ in a special Best Companies award.

Nick Heath, director, at Willmott Dixon, said: “We want to bring construction to a whole new generation of people to show what a fantastic career you can have making a real difference to so many people’s lives.

“The BIM Cave is a client favourite and will act as a perfect example of digital construction in action this Open Doors week.

“We’re very proud to be opening our doors to talk to those interested in a career in construction as well as those that are curious about the developments reshaping their area.

“The construction industry is experiencing a skills shortage and the implications of this are forecasted to continue for some time. It’s therefore particularly important to highlight the range of roles available across the sector – from building management, project management, surveying and estimating to jobs not traditionally site-based such design, bidding, marketing and sales, and digital.”

As well as opening its doors to the BIM Cave, this year’s Open Doors week will also see Willmott Dixon welcoming both schools and members of the public to various other sites around the country.

This office visit is open for bookings on the Open Doors website until 28 February. Spaces are limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
