Nottingham fly-tipper to pay over £800 after council prosecutes

Newark and Sherwood District Council have successfully prosecuted a Nottingham woman after an investigation into a fly-tip.

A spokesperson for the authority said:

‘On Thursday 20 February 2026 we were successful in our prosecution against Louise Jones from Nottingham, who failed to assist officers in the investigation of a fly tip in Tippings Wood, Blidworth in March 2025. Mrs Jones failed to appear in court.

‘It is an offence without reasonable excuse, to fail to provide assistance to an authorised person in exercise of their duties.

‘To avoid further delays and unnecessary costs, the court proceeded in her absence under Section 110 of the Environmental Protection Act.

‘Mrs Jones has been fined £220 with a victim surcharge of £86. We were also awarded £501.15 towards investigation and prosecution costs. That’s a total of £807.15.’

Councillor Paul Taylor, Portfolio Holder for Public Protection and Community Relations said:

“Thank you to our hardworking teams for their swift and proactive response. Their commitment means we’re not only dealing with fly tipping incidents quickly but also taking wider steps to prevent them from happening in the first place. Whether that’s target-hardening vulnerable sites or tackling long-standing hotspots such as Deerdale Lane.

“Fly tipping remains a serious issue not just in Newark and Sherwood, but across the country. While we continue to do everything within our power locally, the ability to prosecute offenders and the level of fines imposed ultimately sits beyond our control. Even so, we will keep working with partners wherever possible to keep our district safe, clean and protected from this kind of criminal behaviour.”
