If you’re travelling on the tram network today (Tuesday, April 3) look out for group of young patients and volunteers from Nottingham Children’s Hospital tackling the ‘Tram Challenge’ to raise money for the hospital’s Youth Service.
The young people from the hospital’s Youth Service, who are all aged between 13 and 21 years old, have made it their mission to visit all 51 stations on the NET network over a single day, taking a selfie at each stop. The team will be wearing Robin Hood hats to promote the Children’s Hospital, for which the Nottingham legend is the mascot.
The team is hoping to raise £200 in sponsorship for the Youth Service, as part of the Big Appeal for Nottingham Children’s Hospital.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of Nottingham Hospital’s Youth Service, which is based within Nottingham Children’s Hospital at the Queen’s Medical Centre. The Youth Service supports young people, aged 11-21, who have long-term health conditions or are patients at Nottingham Children’s Hospital.
One of the aims of the Youth Service is to help its young people develop essential life skills, and they have been hard at work planning their journey across Nottingham City in preparation for the Challenge.
Callum Sharpe, 21, said he’s getting involved in the NET Challenge because “it’s a chance to raise money for the simply brilliant NUH Youth Service, which has done so much for me and many other people over twenty years.”
Mark Howard, Senior Youth Worker who is leading the team in their NET Challenge, said: “We’re looking forward to exploring the City of Nottingham together and to spread awareness about how the Big Appeal benefits thousands of children at Nottingham Children’s Hospital.”
The Challenge is an example of the many ways that NET is supporting Nottingham Hospitals NHS Trust, including sponsoring the Nurse and Midwife of the Year 2018.
The Youth Service team will begin their NET challenge at the Queen’s Medical Centre tramstop at 10am this morning and hope to complete the challenge by 3pm the same day. You can follow the team on Twitter with the hashtag #BigAppealNETchallenge.
The Big Appeal aims to raise £4m over four years to help patients and their families at Nottingham Children’s Hospital, which is based at the Queen’s Medical Centre, by providing improvements to parent and family accommodation, making the ward environment more child-friendly, funding specialist diagnostic equipment and supporting research into childhood diseases.
