Nottingham: Incident scaled down and man detained as police deal with second package

Police have significantly reduced the cordon, enabling many people to return to their homes, following the discovery of suspicious packages in Lenton.

A controlled explosion was carried out after a package was found in Maxwell Court. Following inquiries, it was confirmed the package posed no risk to the public.

Specialist search teams are still assessing a package found in nearby Allington Avenue.

A smaller cordon remains in place until it can be made safe.

Affected people, many of whom are students, have been provided with temporary accommodation by the city’s universities. Local families impacted have been taken in by relatives and friends.

As part of their investigation, police have since detained a man under the Mental Health Act.

Superintendent Jon Foy, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “We’d like to thank all those who took in friends and neighbours who were displaced.

“We’d also like to thank residents for their patience and understanding during what has been a complex and challenging incident.

“Specialist search teams remain in the area as work continues to make the remaining package safe.”
