Four Nottingham Kayak Club paddlers were chosen to compete as part of GB team at the prestigious European Marathon Championships. This was held in Ponte de Lima, Portugal, 27th June to 2nd July.
Paddlers in marathon racing compete in either one person (K1) or two person (K2) boats and race over 16 miles. These races require strength, endurance and tactical paddling as advantage can be gained over the long course by making use of the washes of the other racing boats.
Zyggy Chmiel out manoeuvred a Hungarian paddler in the late stages of his race to take 3rd place in the under 23 K1.
Lani Belcher raced in the senior ladies k1 where she had a very exciting finish missing out on Gold by 0.2 of a second to secure silver.
Lani then doubled up with Hayleigh Mason in the senior ladies K2 and they achieved a 4th place finish. Zyggy Chmiel and Nicky Cresser were placed 6th in the senior men’s K2 one of the highest placed finishes for a British crew in several years.
These paddlers will now go to the World Championship in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa on the 9th/10th September where they hope to better their results.
