After successfully completing over 250 schemes in phase 1, work has now started on phase 2 of the Streets for People programme.
Thanks to £5.85 million investment from the Government’s Local Transport Plan, the team can continue with the Streets for People programme to improve roads/paths and make walking and cycling easier and safer.
Around 15.9km of roads/paths will be repaired and improved. The team will also continue to plant more trees and improve waste management.
The roads chosen for improvement have been put forward by local people and prioritised by ward councillors.
To ensure the funds go as far as possible, the programme is made up of both standard road resurfacing and preventative maintenance. This approach will allow the team to cover a larger area and improve more roads within all wards in the city.
The money will be used to improve the worst-affected roads and pavements. The funds have been fully utilised to deliver all schemes on the programme before the end of September 2025. Some of the roads that will be improved include Bulwell Lane, Hereford Road and Kilbourn Street.
The Streets for People programme has been shortlisted for a national Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE) award under the ‘Best Community and Neighbourhood Initiative’ category.
Nottingham City Council Leader and Executive Member for Strategic Regeneration, Transport and Communications, Councillor Neghat Khan said:
“Streets for People is a fantastic programme that makes it easier and safer to choose walking and cycling for short trips, improve air quality, and reduce carbon emissions from transport. That’s exactly what I want for our city.
“I’m proud that the programme has received national recognition – and pleased that we can build on the success of the work we’ve done so far. We’ve listened to our residents and worked closely with councillors to prioritise the areas that will benefit the most from better roads and greener spaces.”
