Nottingham’s former Royal Mail sorting office to open as new student accommodation

Multi-award-winning premium student accommodation provider True Student is bringing its innovative take on student accommodation to the East Midlands, with the historic former Nottingham Royal Mail sorting office set to be its latest opening.

Having remained vacant for 20 years, the landmark scheme has breathed new life into the historic building, transforming it into a state-of-the-art student living space. The development preserves the building’s heritage while giving it a fresh purpose.

Located in the heart of the city on Bath Street, the new site will open this autumn. The vibrant 13-storey space will feature 661 premium bedrooms, with a focus on student mental health, wellbeing, and integrating students into the city’s rich culture and community.

Deeply committed to supporting regional growth, True Student has prioritised partnerships with Nottinghamshire-based contractors, with 58% of the contract spend going to local supply chains and around 200 jobs created during the construction.

The development has also created significant opportunities for students in the city, including seven apprenticeships, 125 completed apprentice weeks, and engagement with 137 students from the University of Nottingham, Nottingham Trent University, and Denewood Academy, who visited the site to learn about the diverse range of jobs involved in delivering such an ambitious project.

Ben Morley, Managing Director of True Student, said: “Increasing student numbers in Nottingham has brought enormous vibrancy to the city but has also placed real pressure on the local private rental market. At True Student, we want to offer a solution to that, providing high-quality, purpose-built accommodation that not only reduces this strain but creates a thriving community for students to live, connect, and grow.

“Our ultimate goal isn’t just to provide accommodation but to help students and the city embrace each other fully. From revitalising a historic site to supporting local businesses, we want this new development to benefit the city while also helping students thrive during their university experience, welcoming everything Nottingham has to offer. We’re excited to open our doors later this year and welcome guests into a space that redefines what student living can be.”

Situated just a 15-minute walk from Nottingham Trent University and a short 20-minute bus ride from the University of Nottingham, the new accommodation is perfectly positioned for students to explore Nottingham’s creative culture, diverse food scene, and lively nightlife as they study.

In addition to stylish apartments and bedrooms, students will benefit from an array of premium amenities, including an on-site gym and vibrant social spaces such as an outdoor courtyard and a games den. With a focus on effortless socialisation, True Student also offers the widest range of events of any student accommodation in the country, with a calendar of ‘trueLife’ events such as welcome parties, pamper nights, and puppy yoga. Events and workshops exploring real-life skills, such as nutrition sessions and cooking classes, are also regularly held to better equip students for life after university.

Ben continued: “We’re invested in our students, from their health and wellbeing to helping them make the transition into the world post-studies as smooth and engaging as possible. True Student is their home from home during a pivotal time in their life, and we want to provide them with positive skills and experiences to take with them as they continue through life after uni.”

Community safety is also a key factor, and True Student has already begun working closely with Nottingham’s emergency services to ensure a safe and welcoming environment that helps students, as well as their parents, feel at ease as they settle into their new home.

With seven spaces currently open across the UK, the new site is True Student’s first location in the East Midlands, with Leicester soon to follow later this year, as well as Sheffield not long after in nearby South Yorkshire.

Last week, True Student celebrated the Nottingham project’s topping-out, marking a significant milestone in its journey to completion.
