Nottingham’s Sikh community give out FREE water at Turban tying event

The Nottingham Sikh Community and Youth Services group are in Old Market Square until 4 pm today.

As per previous years, SCYS has organised a Schveel and Turban Tying event to take place in Nottingham City Centre this Saturday from 10am till 4pm.

This is a great opportunity in which we get to tell people about Sikhi, give out thousands of Sikh leaflets as well as free drinks.

A spokesperson said:

‘In June each year, Sikhs worldwide hand out cool drinks in remembrance of how the 5th Sikh Guru, Guru Arjan Dev Ji, remained calm despite the most extreme of circumstances.

‘We join in this tradition by handing out free drinks in Old Market Square in Nottingham City Centre.

‘In 1606, they gave their life standing up for freedom of religion. They refused to convert to Islam and were subjected to many days of relentless torture.

‘This included being seated on a red hot plate whilst burning sand was poured over them, yet the Guru kept cool and calm. They were subsequently martyred by the oppressive Mughal rulers.

‘We ask those enjoying a refreshing drink to please take a moment to reflect on the many sacrifices given by those before us, in order for us to enjoy the freedom we do today.

‘Let also us pray for, and try to spread love, peace and tolerance in the world.’
