The volunteer officers were patrolling rural areas of the county.
A spokesperson said:
‘On the 10 June 2025, two of our rural Special Constables were out doing what they do best — keeping communities safe. But things took a dramatic turn when a car came flying over a hill and crashed straight into theirs.
‘Thankfully, no one was hurt — but this could easily have been a fatal incident.
‘The 48-year-old driver? He blew over three times the legal limit at the roadside, and over 2.5 times on the evidential machine in custody. He’s now been charged and will appear in court.
‘This one reckless decision has tied up police resources, put volunteer officers in danger, and taken a specialist vehicle off the road.
‘Our Special Constables give up their time to protect others, for free. They are an invaluable resource to the community and this type of incident stops them in their tracks…literally. Thankfully, no members of the public were involved in the collision.
‘We’d also like to say “Thank You” to the member of the public in the area that called 999, to ensure our control room were aware our officers had been involved in a collision.
Please — think before you drive. Don’t drink and drive.’
