As the morning progresses towards midday, conditions will improve. Rain will clear away, giving way to brighter spells and increasing sunshine. Temperatures will slowly rise to around 4 or 5°C by lunchtime. Winds will remain fresh from the west or west-north-west, maintaining a chilly feel despite the improving brightness.
Afternoon
The afternoon looks brighter and largely dry, with sunny spells dominating for a time. Some patchy cloud may drift through, but rain is unlikely. Temperatures will peak at around 5°C, making it a cold but clearer start to the year. Winds will continue from the west-north-west and stay breezy, with gusts approaching 30mph at times.
Evening
During the evening, skies will gradually clear again, leading to a cold end to New Year’s Day. Temperatures will fall quickly after sunset, dropping from around 4°C to closer to 1 or 2°C later in the night. Winds will remain moderate from the west-north-west, and with clearer skies developing, there is a risk of frost forming overnight.
