Notts County fans fill Old Market Square for promotion celebration

Notts County supporters gathered in Old Market Square today as Nottingham celebrated the club’s promotion to Sky Bet League One.

Players, staff and club officials appeared at the civic celebration following Monday’s 3-0 play-off final victory over Salford City at Wembley, which secured the Magpies’ return to the third tier of English football.

The event brought fans into Nottingham city centre to mark the achievement, with the club’s promotion trophy shown from the Council House balcony during the afternoon celebration.

Nottingham City Council described the atmosphere in the square as “incredible” as supporters came together to recognise the efforts of head coach Martin Paterson, his players and staff, the club’s owners and board, and the fans who followed the team through the season.

The Wembley win completed a memorable campaign for Notts County, with goals from Alassana Jatta, Lucas Ness and Jodi Jones sealing promotion in the League Two play-off final.

The celebration was arranged as a family event during the school half-term holiday, with large crowds expected in and around the city centre.

Notts County’s promotion marks another significant step in the club’s recent rise, coming just a few years after their return to the Football League from the National League.

Congratulations were also paid to the supporters who, the council said, “represent our proud city” as the Magpies prepare for life back in League One.
