Notts Police launch week of activity to tackle knife crime

Nottinghamshire Police is preparing to take part in a busy week of activity, aiming to tackle and further reduce knife crime, in support of the national Operation Sceptre.

Operation Sceptre, which begins on Monday (26 April 2021), is just a snapshot of the ongoing year-round work carried out by Nottinghamshire Police and its partners, standing alongside local communities, to tackle knife crime by bringing together all aspects of education, engagement and enforcement.

The force’s activity during the week will include community weapons sweeps, patrols in knife crime hot-spot areas and proactive operations.

Nottinghamshire Police’s dedicated knife crime and Operation Reacher teams will also be deployed in support the proactive knife crime work in the city and county and the force’s schools and early intervention officers will be continuing their work by engaging and working with children in schools, encouraging young people to live positive knife-free lives.

The latest official figures released by the Office for National Statistics show that knife crime has continued to fall in Nottinghamshire, reducing by four percent in the year end to September 2020 compared to the previous year.

Nottinghamshire’s sustained reduction outstripped the national reduction of three per cent and the regional increase of two per cent and it is hoped the force’s recruitment of additional officers will drive offences down even further.

This investment included the creation of a second specialist knife crime team which has quickly hit the ground running, targeting knife crime offenders and working hard to keep our communities safe.

The significant fall in offences of violence is also reflective of the success of Nottinghamshire’s enterprising Violence Reduction Unit – a community partnership working to tackle the underlying causes of violent crime and put vulnerable people on the road to a safer and positive future.
