Notts Police take students out of training to support pandemic efforts

Four more student officers are supporting the force’s virtual remand courts, part of the custody process of moving prisoners which are now being done by the force.

Student police officers have stepped up to help with Nottinghamshire Police’s coronavirus effort.

Ten officers who were previously special constables have been taken out of training to help with policing the government’s guidance.

The officers were chosen because of their experience and training as special constables gave them the necessary skills for the job.

Six of the officers have been taking part in Operation Bion, where neighbourhood officers patrol their areas and give advice to anyone who is not following the Coronavirus restrictions.

The two groups will be switched over so that all ten student officers experience both roles and have the opportunity to develop their skills in both areas.

Superintendent Suk Verma said: “During these exceptional times we have looked at all the different options available to us to make sure that we are providing the service which is needed.

“Having these student officers with all of their experience as special constables was the perfect opportunity to provide some support to our neighbourhood policing and custody teams, who are both significantly adapting the way they work as a result of covid-19.

“They are a valuable and professional resource that will not only provide additional resilience to the force, but also gives them a unique opportunity to develop as student officers.”

One of the officers, Kieran Loftus, explained how it felt to be helping out at a time of national need. Kieran said: “I feel very proud to be able to help support the country at this difficult time.

“It is fantastic that the force is recognising the previous experience of special constables in being able to engage with the public and reduce demand on other officers at this critical time.

“This is definitely a unique experience for anybody joining the police to go through and something that certainly makes us different.

“I’d encourage anyone thinking of becoming a Special Constable to join – it’s a fantastic insight to policing and you will experience things that you can’t find anywhere else. Nottinghamshire Police has also made great strides to adapt and continue recruitment despite the current circumstances.

“Of course I wasn’t expecting to leave training early, but I really think it makes sense given our prior policing experience for us to help our in this way. My family and friends are really proud that I am able to support Nottinghamshire’s communities during this time.”

The officers will complete their full training at a later date.
