Off-duty police officer assaulted in Nottingham city shoplifting incident

Two men are to appear in court after an off-duty police officer was assaulted in Nottingham having intervened in a disturbance.

The officer was walking along Clumber Street, in the city centre, when he saw disorder at the entrance of Sainsbury’s Local.

He intervened after seeing two men arguing with the store manager and security guard following an alleged shoplifting incident.

The officer identified himself as a policeman and attempted to retrieve several items from one of the men after it was alleged they had been stolen from the store.

In doing so, the officer was assaulted by both men who then fled the scene.

The incident happened shortly after 10pm on Sunday (8 June).

Ian Doyle, aged 38, of no fixed address, has been charged with theft from a shop, common assault, and using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to cause that person to believe that immediate unlawful violence would be used against them.

Phillip Davidson, aged 47, of Chedworth Close, St Ann’s, Nottingham, has been charged with assault by beating of an emergency worker.

Both men were granted bail and are due to appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on 26 June.

PC Imran Ahmed, who is overseeing the investigation, said:

“I’d like to commend the officer involved for intervening whilst off-duty.

“Incidents such as this are totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated in our city.

“It is yet another reminder of the kind of bravery and dedication to public service our officers show every day in and out of uniform.”
