Off-duty officer leads police to shopping bag full of cannabis in Nottingham

An off-duty officer led police to the seizure of a shopping bag full of cannabis from a broken-down car.

The police constable was off shift when they saw a vehicle with its hazards on in Upper College Street, Nottingham.

When they started to suspect the driver could be under the influence, the officer rang the police, around 10.50pm on Monday (24 November).

A response team arrived soon after that and were met by the sight of a Volkswagen Golf in the middle of the road and two suspects standing nearby.

As they approached the car, officers began to suspect there could be cannabis inside it, so conducted a search of the vehicle.

This quickly resulted in a shopping bag packed full of individual deals of cannabis being found in the footwell.

Large quantities of cash were also found onboard.

Based on this, two men – both aged 20 – were arrested on suspicion of possessing with intent to supply Class B drugs.

One of them was then additionally arrested on suspicion of drug-driving, when a roadside drugs wipe revealed traces of cannabis.

Sergeant Simon Lacey, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“All the police colleagues involved in this incident deserve praise for their actions, but this is especially true of the off-duty officer.

“They showed great awareness of their surroundings and decision making, despite not actually being on shift at the time.

“After spotting what appeared to be suspicious behaviour, they did the right thing by calling it in, with police colleagues arriving soon after to investigate further.

“Those actions ultimately resulted in the seizure of multiple deal bags full of cannabis and two arrests, so it was a really pleasing outcome.”
