A man has been arrested after off-duty officers and members of the public jumped to a woman’s aid.
Officers received reports of a suspect being restrained by off-duty officers after members of the public intervened after seeing a woman’s bag allegedly being stolen.
After hearing the victim scream for help the two officers jumped to action and with the help of the public found a suspect being restrained on the floor outside a store in The Square, Beeston, just after 6pm yesterday (Sunday 1 May).
A 39-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery at the scene.
He remains in custody as enquiries continue.
Detective Sergeant Matt Dumbrell, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Thanks to the help and actions of members of the public we were able to arrest a man in connection with this incident at the scene only minutes after it happened.
“Thankfully the victim did not sustain any physical injuries but was left very shaken by the unprovoked incident.
“Incidents like this show that even if our officers are not on duty and are going about their personal lives and everyday business that no matter what they will step in and always be on hand to help the public.
“Our jobs don’t end when our shift ends and I hope this reassures the public that we will always step in to help if needed.
“We are continuing to investigate exactly what happened and are carrying out CCTV enquiries and would ask anyone who may have seen what happened to get in touch with us to help us with our investigation.”
Anyone with any information or who may have witnessed the incident is asked to call 101, quoting incident number 627 of 1 May 2022, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
