Off-duty police officer chases two shoplifters

An off-duty police officer helped to apprehend two suspected shoplifters after stopping to refuel his car.

The officer was on the forecourt of Tesco Express on Nottingham Road, Mansfield, when he saw two people running out with laundry products at around 11.45am on Wednesday 27 May.

After checking in with staff and paying for his fuel, the officer drove towards the town centre, soon catching sight of both suspects and calling for back-up.

He then chased the suspects across Fisher Park, where he was able to detain them with the help of uniformed colleagues.

Two men, aged 40 and 33, were arrested on suspicion of theft.

Inspector Katie Eustace, district commander for Mansfield, said:

“This was a great bit of work by an off-duty officer who didn’t think twice before putting himself in harm’s way.

“Tackling shoplifting is a priority in Mansfield, so anyone committing offences can expect to come face-to-face with a police officer – even when they aren’t at work.”
