Old Market Square: Four suspects wearing face coverings carrying knives and machetes arrested today

Police arrested four suspects and seized three weapons following a stop in Nottingham city centre.

Officers were called after a group of people wearing masks were reportedly seen carrying knives near Old Market Square.

This took place around 1.40 pm today (21 June), with police arriving minutes later and carrying out a search of the area.

A group of suspects were spotted nearby shortly afterwards, with police surrounding and then stopping them in Albert Street.

Two machetes and a pocket knife were all recovered after police conducted a search at the roadside.

Quantities of cannabis, cash and a burner-style phone were also discovered and seized by the officers.

A 21-year-old man, and three boys, aged 14, 14, and 16, were all arrested on suspicion of possessing a knife in a public place.

They were also arrested on suspicion of possessing with intent to supply Class B drugs.

Chief Inspector Iain Blackstock, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “There is absolutely no excuse for anyone to carry a machete, pocket knife, or other bladed weapons in public.

“We’d like to thank whoever reported seeing these weapons, as it allowed us to take quick action and ultimately take three knives off our streets.

“Four suspects have been arrested in connection with this incident, but our inquiries are still very much ongoing, so we’d ask anyone with any information to contact us.

“This can be reported either to the police on 101, quoting incident 412 of 21 June 2024, or to Crimestoppers anonymously by calling 0800 555 111.”
