Broxtowe Borough Council says hundreds of bikes have been stolen over the last three years – with the majority of thefts taking place in Beeston.
The local authority is set to discuss the issue at its next Community Safety Committee on Thursday, September 9.
From August 2018 to July 2021 there have been 544 bike thefts – but the number has started to fall from 255 (2018 to 2019) to 134 (2020 to 2021).
The council says the highest rates over the last three years have been in Beeston.
The papers prepared for the meeting state: “This may be due to an increase in cycle ownership and use in the Beeston area due to its easy access to the city and a range of other public transport options which enable the use of cycles as a means of travel which are unavailable in the rest of the borough.
“The higher numbers of students living in Beeston may also have an impact of these figures.”
The council says action has been taken to ensure thieves cannot strike in the area, which included a series of cycle marking events in Stapleford and Beeston Square.
Nottinghamshire Police have also held cycle marking sessions at university and college events and in the community.
Around 170 free cycle alarm locks and 100 shed alarms have been issued.
