Overnight closures for three weeks A46 between Six Hills and Widmerpool starts tonight

Road users are reminded to allow extra time for their journeys as work starts to extend the life of the concrete section of the A46 between Six Hills and Widmerpool.

The National Highways scheme involves renewing sections of concrete, reconstructing and sealing the joints between them, retexturing the surface and reinstating road markings and studs.

At the same time, localised patching repairs will be carried out to any sections of asphalt carriageway that need it.

National Highways Project Manager Kyle Morley said:

“Decades of use and hundreds of millions of journeys now mean this section of the A46 between Six Hills and Widmerpool needs work to extend its life and ensure it remains safe and dependable.

“Our improvements will also minimise the number of unplanned works and closures to keep the road operational.

“The work involves a 24/7 contraflow and there will be some overnight closures to set that up, starting next week so we advise people to plan their journeys before setting off and to allow plenty of time.”

To carry out the work safely and in the most efficient manner, a contraflow will be in place 24 hours a day, seven days a week until work is complete next spring.

It will be done in six different phases as follows:

  • Phase one from Six Hills to Dalby on the northbound carriageway
  • Phase two from Dalby to Six Hills on the southbound carriageway
  • Phase three from Willoughby to Dalby on the southbound carriageway
  • Phase four from Dalby to Willoughby on the northbound carriageway
  • Phase five from Willoughby to Widmerpool on the northbound carriageway and finally
  • Phase six from Widmerpool to Willoughby on the southbound carriageway

To set up the first phase the A46 will be closed in both directions overnight from 8pm to 6am for three weeks, seven days a week starting on Monday, 25 September. Traffic will be diverted via the A606 and A607 via Melton Mowbray.

Further overnight closures will be needed for between one and two weeks at a time to enable contraflow phases to be switched as work progresses along the road.

There will be 24-hour diversions in place for any entry or exit slip roads which are closed when they are located within a contraflow section. Signed diversions will be in place via local roads.
