Picture released after tram staff assaulted challenging alleged fare dodger

Police investigating an assault on a tram would like to speak to the person in this picture.

A member of staff was verbally attacked after approaching a man on the tram and asking to check his ticket.

When it quickly became apparent that he hadn’t paid, she then asked him to get off the tram at the next stop.

As the tram arrived in New Basford, the man stood up and lashed out at the woman’s body-worn camera – hitting her in the chest in the process.

He then got off, while continuing to be abusive towards the staff member, around 5:40 pm on 28 December 2023.

An investigation has been launched into the incident, with police releasing a picture of someone they’d like to speak to as part of this.

PC Daniel Humphrey, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“The violence and aggression shown in this incident has no place on public transport, or anywhere else in our communities.

“The staff member was simply trying to do her job in this instance and really didn’t deserve to be treated in the manner she was.

“We would ask that anyone who recognises the man in this picture gets in touch with us, as we would like to speak to him.

“Anyone who has any information about this incident should report it to the police by calling 101, quoting incident 481 of 28 December 2023.

“They can also report it anonymously to Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111.”

A spokesperson for Nottingham Express Transit (NET), added:

“Abuse of any form against our employees or customers is totally unacceptable, and we will always report such incidents to the police.

“We’ll also do all we can to help them identify and prosecute those responsible.

“This includes sharing high-definition footage from a CCTV system that covers the entire network and bodycams worn by our dedicated team of customer experience agents.”
