Residents have contacted The Wire reporting littering in Bridgford Park as lockdown rules are relaxed.
Bridgford Parks public toilets are fully open.
Drinks cans, packaging waste and even a shopping trolley can be seen strewn over Bridgford Park and Bridge Field as people enjoy the sunny warm weather.
There are also unconfirmed reports of the wooded areas being used as toilets.
Several days of fine weather have also seen lots of people enjoying the park areas in West Bridgford, taking purchased food and drink and sitting in the park areas.
Bars and takeaways in West Bridgford started to open up safely recently to offer food and drink to be consumed outside – this is an essential part of local business recovery and generally most of the community support this initiative to keep jobs safe in the area.
But residents are also reporting high levels of waste left in the park on a regular basis.
One resident told The Wire today: ‘Over the last week, every morning, the bins have been full and overflowing, with litter is strewn throughout the park – cans, plastic drink containers, shopping trolleys, takeaway packaging.
“There are also reports of people using the denser forested areas as toilets, given that all facilities remain closed. Great to see people out enjoying themselves, but wonder if opening bars without facilities is creating a strain on the local area.’
Rushcliffe Borough Council’s Executive Manager for Neighbourhoods Dave Banks said:
“Police patrols are increasing at the park and the surrounding area in central West Bridgford to remind residents and visitors to enjoy our open spaces responsibly.
“The park’s toilets are open and can be used safely. We understand the current circumstances with takeaway licences in place at some outlets mean customers may wish to enjoy their purchases at the park.
“In line with signage, we ask them to observe social distancing measures and help our waste team keep the park clean and tidy for everyone to enjoy.
“Streetwise is further assisting efforts with additional cleaning around the park.”
