The incident happened on Moorbridge Lane in Stapleford.
Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue service said:
‘We were called to Moorbridge Lane Stapleford, upon arrival we were faced with a rapidly spreading field fire.
‘The fire was threatening peoples properties and we believed that it could jump in to the next field.’
Incident Commander Gary Fordham quickly requested three fire engines, a joint police and fire drone and the police to close the road.
The control room quickly mobilised Ilkeston Community Fire Station and Stockhill Fire Station to support.
‘We used light portable pump to extract water from the Erewash Canal (thanks to the Canal and River trust, who supported us).
‘We also commandeered some farming machinery, to move our equipment around and create a fire break.’
‘As of 7pm tonight, there are no hot spots in the fields. However the ‘muck heap’ will continue to smoulder for some considerable time, possibly days.
‘We will continue to re-inspect the heap, if you see the fire and believe that it is now spreading or out of control, please ring 999 and ask for the fire service. ‘
