Plans for £5 million junction improvements at A614 Mickledale Lane progressing

A £5million scheme to upgrade a key junction along the A614 is progressing.

The Mickledale Lane junction in Bilsthorpe was originally included in Nottinghamshire County Council’s A614/A6097 Major Road Network Scheme, works on which are due to commence this summer. The junction was removed from the package in June 2023 due to impacts on the value for money assessment on the wider scheme.

Works have now moved forward on putting together a detailed design of the traffic signal-controlled junction and these designs are expected to be completed by the end of spring 2024.

This latest proposal is in direct response to the strong local support at consultation events held in 2019 from residents and businesses in Bilsthorpe.

The county council is also consulting with local homeowners and landowners in close proximity to the junction and will be engaging with the local parish council to ensure local views are listened to.

Both in person and virtual consultation events will be held to engage the wider community where designs and scheme benefits will be presented.

Works on the junction are expected to take two years with the construction phase scheduled to take around 12 months.

Councillor Keith Girling, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Asset Management at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “The Mickledale Lane junction is in need of improvement to increase accessibility to and from local villages in the surrounding area.

“The junction was originally included in our A614/A6097 Major Road Network Scheme and I’d like to confirm that its removal from this scheme is not a negative for local people.

“Our consultation with local residents in 2019 showed that there was strong support for a traffic signal-controlled junction, however the DfT’s funding and benefit cost ratio process is heavily weighted towards journey time savings along the main route which in this case would be the A614.

“We have balanced a number of important improvements along the wider A614/A6097 corridor with this scheme to benefit residents and we are pleased that through doing these works we will hopefully be able to remove the perception from residents that the current junction is unsafe.

“The funding for these junction improvement works sits outside of the DfT’s funding for the wider A614 scheme and this funding will come from the county council. This was approved in June 2023.”

“As we look ahead to the future, the next milestone in the Mickledale Lane scheme is the completion of the scheme design and we hope to be able to share this with local residents and road users early in the summer.”
