A suspected thief was captured in a canal after failing to outrun police in Nottingham city centre.
Police were called to NCP Car Park, in Maid Marian Way, after a car alarm was activated by an intruder at approximately 1.45am on Wednesday (24 July).
Officers arrived and spotted a man running from the car park. They gave chase before a police dog joined in the pursuit, which prompted the suspect to jump into Nottingham Canal, outside Nottingham Magistrates’ Court.
The suspect was pulled out the water by officers and arrested on suspicion of theft from a motor vehicle.
Following inquiries, the 34-year-old was further arrested in relation to two other thefts reported on 16 July.
He was taken into custody for questioning.
Inspector Usha Madaraa, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:
“Thanks to some fantastic work by officers and a well-trained police dog, the suspect was arrested just minutes after the car alarm went off.
“He tried to evade capture by jumping into the canal but failed miserably to get away. Needless to say he’s proved himself to be no Adam Peaty.
“I hope this arrest sends a strong message to criminals that whether you run or swim, you can’t hide from our officers.”
