A suspect attempting to evade police was successfully tracked down by police dog Reno in a dramatic nighttime pursuit.
The incident unfolded in near-total darkness at around 3 am on Monday, 30 December, after a driver fled on foot following a traffic stop in Colwick.
The incident began when an officer pulled over a vehicle on Daleside Road. The driver immediately sprinted away, prompting the deployment of PD Reno and his handler to assist in the search.
Despite the challenging conditions, Reno led his handler over a fence and through thick undergrowth, ultimately locating the suspect lying face down in the woodland.
After being confronted by the officer, the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody.
The suspect, a 24-year-old man, has been charged with multiple offences, including driving while disqualified, driving without insurance, failing to cooperate with a preliminary breath test, and obstructing a constable. He is scheduled to appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on 23 January.
Chief Inspector Mark Dickson of Nottinghamshire Police praised the efforts of the dog unit, highlighting the crucial role PD Reno played in the operation.
“This was another good result for our police dogs and a perfect example of the kind of situation where they really come into their own,” he said.
“With darkness all around, it is extremely unlikely this suspect would have been found without the deployment of Reno and his handler.”
PD Reno, a six-year-old German Shepherd, has been a part of Nottinghamshire Police’s dog unit since December 2019. In 2023, he and his handler represented the force at the national police dog trials, showcasing their exceptional teamwork and skill.
This latest success adds to PD Reno’s impressive record, underscoring the indispensable role of police dogs in tackling crime and protecting communities.
