Police dogs and drone track down wanted man in Nottingham

Highly-trained police dogs and handlers, a high-tech drone and tenacious Operation Reacher and response officers worked together to hunt down and detain a wanted suspect in the dead of night.

Officers had followed a car in the Radford area of Nottingham which was believed to contain a man wanted for multiple offences.

After the car entered a dead end, a man got out and fled on foot, scaled a seven-foot metal spiked fence and headed into an alleyway, as he desperately tried to evade capture.

Specially-trained police dogs and handlers were quickly on the scene and started tracking and searching gardens while a police drone equipped with thermal imaging cameras joined in the hunt for the suspect.

Within minutes the man was tracked down, but the chase continued after he jumped over a fence and entered another garden.

The drone picked him up and guided officers as they closed the net on him before he was intercepted and arrested on an industrial estate in Mansfield Road, Nottingham, at around 11.55 pm on Monday (24 July 2023).

A bag containing a quantity of suspected crack cocaine was also recovered.

A 33-year-old man, who was wanted on recall to prison and for possession of an offensive weapon, was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon in a public place, a number of traffic offences and possession with intent to supply Class A drugs.

Police Constable Harvey Holt, of Nottinghamshire Police’s City Central Operation Reacher team, said: “I’m pleased our extensive and dogged work in this case helped to secure this significant arrest.

“Joined-up working involving different departments within Nottinghamshire Police is essential to our work in investigating criminal activity and the collaborative work in this case is a great example of how beneficial this joint approach can be.”
