A police officer was bitten after arresting a woman on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly.
Response teams located a woman in the Marmion Road area of St Ann’s after receiving a report that someone was screaming and shouting for help.
A woman was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly in a public place and further arrested on suspicion of assault after a police officer suffered a bite which drew blood and required treatment in hospital shortly after the incident at around 11.50pm yesterday (4 May 2021).
Sergeant Lawrence Verney attended the incident. He said: “We’ll always instantly respond to incidents where there’s a concern for someone’s safety and we’re glad that we were quickly able to locate a woman.
“However, clearly this type of behaviour is completely unacceptable and we absolutely won’t tolerate assaults on emergency workers. Spitting and biting in particular comes with extra risks while the coronavirus is still present in our communities and it really is an abhorrent act.
“Several members of the public were worried by what they heard and we’d like to thank them for contacting us about it.
“The woman remains in custody while our enquiries continue.”
