Police officer injured after foot chase following street attack

Determined police officers foiled a suspect’s escape after reports of a street attack.

It was reported that two men were punched in the face during an incident in Clifton Place, Mansfield, at around 4.10am today (Sunday 19 June 2022).

An officer chased after a suspect and a colleague was barged into while trying to block off his escape in a nearby car park.

The officer was dragged along the floor after grabbing hold of the suspect’s leg. Colleagues quickly came to his aid and the man was arrested.

The officer suffered cuts and grazes to his arms, legs and hip during the incident. His welfare is being looked after by Nottinghamshire Police.

The other two victims who were assaulted suffered facial injuries. One was taken to hospital for treatment.

A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault causing actual bodily harm, assault causing grievous bodily harm and common assault.

Inspector Kate Long, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Police officers work tirelessly day in and day out to protect the public and keep people safe.

“It simply shouldn’t be considered part of their job to be assaulted. As this arrest shows we will not tolerate assaults on police officers or fellow emergency workers, whether physical or verbal, and we will take robust action against anyone who engages in such violent behaviour.”
