Police officer suffers broken nose in Nottingham incident where six officers were needed to detain one man

A police officer suffered a broken nose after being kicked in the face whilst trying to detain a suspected drug dealer.

Three other officers were also hurt while trying to stop the man who violently resisted arrest.

It took six officers in total to detain him before he was taken into custody.

The assault happened after officers witnessed an alleged drug deal and quickly took action.

The force’s knife crime team had been conducting proactive patrols in Radford in response to drug dealers using the area over the last few weeks.

Plain-clothed officers witnessed an alleged drug deal and called for back-up to arrest the man.

Uniformed officers in the area were quickly on the scene before he violently resisted arrest.

A 22-year-old man was arrested for actual bodily harm on a constable and possession with intent to supply class A and B drugs at around 10.45am in Castle Retail Park on Thursday (6 May 2021). He has since been bailed with conditions.

Inspector of the force’s Knife Crime Team Craig Nolan said suffering violence shouldn’t be part of the job for police officers.

He said: “This kind of violence against police officers simply doing their job is utterly unacceptable and will never be tolerated. Officers pull on their uniforms and head out on patrol every day with the same objective in mind – to protect the public from harm and return home in the same condition.

“I’ve been working in policing for 26 years and this has been happening throughout my career. The officers who were in Radford yesterday morning shouldn’t be getting injured like that for simply doing their job. They simply do not deserve to be assaulted during the course of their duties.

“When officers come across people committing offences an arrest in necessary, they either stop and fight and there is a confrontation or they run from the scene and then it’s a test of the officers fitness. It’s a flight or fight response.

“It took six officers to detain the man, in this instance he just didn’t want to be caught. Despite all the equipment officers have these days, people still decide to fight with officers and resist arrest.

“I don’t think we are seeing an increase in assaults of this nature more, it’s just with legislation now in place, it’s being brought into the spotlight more in the media.

“One officer was taken to hospital for treatment and has since been discharged with a broken nose. He knew straight away after her was kicked. He is now recovering at home. Meanwhile three other officers suffered bruising to the arm, scratches to the face and a swollen knee trying to place the man in handcuffs.

“I would also like to thank those courageous members of our force who put their own lives in danger to protect the rights and safety of others.”
