Police respond after man threatens to blow up his kitchen using the gas cooker

Officers evacuated residents from their homes in Hemlock Avenue, Stapleford.

The incident happened just after midnight on Tuesday 18 May,  police officers responded to a report of man barricading himself in and making threats to ignite gas from his oven.

Police say that he initially refused to engage with officers, holding the kitchen door closed and threatening to come at them with knives if they tried to approach.

Officers had to leave the house whilst still engaging with the man as they heard a ticking noise believed to be the ignition switch from the gas cooker.

Neighbours were in the process of leaving their homes when the man left the property and was then arrested.
