Police have thanked the public for their understanding after the discovery of a suspicious package led to several road closures near Nottingham’s Old Market Square.
Police were called shortly after 4.30am today after the item – believed to be a battery pack for an electric scooter – was found in Long Row.

Acting out of caution, officers closed surrounding streets as further investigation work was carried out.

Explosive ordinance experts later carried out a controlled explosion and ascertained the item posed no threat to members of the public.

Detective Inspector Lisa Jones, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:
“This incident caused significant disruption in the city this morning and we would like to thank the public for the patience and understanding shown while necessary investigation work was carried out.

“Although this item was found to pose no risk to the public, the person who discovered it did exactly the right thing by reporting their concerns to us.”
An investigation into what happened is ongoing.
