Police statement after homes evacuated and bomb disposal teams called

Police have thanked the public for their patience and understanding after the discovery of a suspicious package in Mansfield.

Officers were called at around 6.15pm this evening (15 December) after the item – now believed to be a battery pack – was found in Carter Lane, which led to several road closures.

As a precaution, officers temporarily evacuated nearby homes while investigation work was carried out.

The Army Explosive Ordinance Division later carried out a controlled explosion in Carter Lane and determined that the item posed no threat to members of the public.

Chief Inspector Iain Blackstock, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “I would like to reassure affected residents and the wider community that the decision to evacuate homes was a precautionary step and we have worked with our partner agencies to minimise disruption and ensure people can return to their homes as quickly as possible.

“Road closures in the area are lifted, but it may take some time for traffic to clear.

“Residents affected by the temporary evacuation in Argyle Street, Mill Street, Carter Lane, Reindeer Street, and Beresford Street can now return to their homes.

“I’d like to thank members of the public for their patience while the necessary investigation work was carried out and this incident was brought to a safe conclusion.”

An investigation into the incident is ongoing. Anyone with additional information is asked to call 101 quoting incident number 481 of 15 December 2025.
